Aetna Health Insurance Review: Our 2026–2027 Verdict

Aetna is worth comparing for Medicare Advantage, prescription-drug, employer and other eligible coverage—but not as a 2026 or 2027 individual ACA Marketplace option. The distinction is essential. Aetna, owned by CVS Health, left the Individual & Family Plans exchange business effective January 1, 2026. It continues to sell other products, and its announced 2027 Medicare lineup includes HMO, PPO, Medicare Advantage with drug coverage, Special Needs Plans, a stand-alone SilverScript prescription plan and Medicare Supplement options where available.

For a Medicare shopper, the strongest reasons to research Aetna are local plan choice, some $0-additional-premium Medicare Advantage options, a 2027 portfolio of covered prescriptions and supplemental services, and published CMS contract-quality information. The biggest reasons to compare carefully are potentially narrow HMO networks, changes between the 2026 and 2027 portfolios, authorization and referral rules, county-specific availability, and drug costs that depend on the exact formulary. A national logo cannot resolve those local questions.

At a glance: Aetna's October 2026 announcement lists Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plans in 41 states plus Washington, D.C., for 2027, compared with 43 states plus D.C. for 2026. Its October 8 quality announcement says more than 69% of Aetna Medicare Advantage members were enrolled in contracts rated at least four stars for the 2027 rating year; this is an enrollment-weighted share, not a universal four-star score. The historical map elsewhere on this page shows 17 former ACA exchange states, not those Medicare service areas. Who Aetna Is—and Why Its Product Lines Matter

Aetna has operated as part of CVS Health since CVS completed its acquisition in November 2018. It markets and administers medical, dental, pharmacy, behavioral health and other benefits across different legal entities, employer groups and public programs. Its Medicare business and the former Aetna CVS Health individual ACA exchange business are not interchangeable insurance policies. A member enrolled through an employer should not assume a Medicare Advantage Extra Benefits Card is included, and someone seeing a legacy ACA rate table should not interpret it as a 2027 quote.

In this review, the current shopping focus is 2027 Medicare coverage during the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period, with a separate look at 2026 plans, employer and Medicaid programs, and the history of ACA withdrawal. Medicare Advantage substitutes a private plan for the way a person receives Original Medicare Part A and Part B benefits, while Medicare Supplement works alongside Original Medicare. A stand-alone Part D policy covers eligible prescriptions and does not itself replace medical insurance. Which Aetna insurance company issues a policy depends on the product and state.

What Changed for Aetna in 2027?

Aetna announced its 2027 Medicare products on October 3, 2026. It plans Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug coverage in 41 states and Washington, D.C., accessible to approximately 57 million Medicare-eligible people in the described service areas. Those 57 million are people living where products may be offered—not the number enrolled with Aetna. The 2026 announcement had listed 43 states plus D.C. and a similar eligible-population reach. The difference reinforces why returning members must read their Annual Notice of Change and check the new year's local plan selection.

Aetna says it is expanding selected Prime HMO offerings, growing its network-based High Value Provider Incentive Program into two additional states and expanding Chronic Condition Special Needs Plans (C-SNPs) to a total of 25 states in 2027, including six newly added states. These are company-wide portfolio announcements, not guarantees that a named HMO, C-SNP or incentive exists in a particular county. Aetna also says a plan with a $0 additional monthly plan premium will be offered in every county where its Medicare Advantage products are available. Beneficiaries generally still pay their Medicare Part B premium unless a specific program helps pay it.

Medicare's Annual Open Enrollment runs from October 15 through December 7, 2026 for most January 1, 2027 changes. It is open now as of this review's October 23, 2026 research date. Do not wait for the old plan to terminate before checking prescription coverage, primary care doctors, hospitals, preferred pharmacies and out-of-pocket limits.

Aetna Medicare Advantage: HMO, HMO-POS and PPO

Older adult comparing Aetna Medicare Advantage information with an independent advisor in a bright office
Illustrative Medicare-plan discussion. Confirm the exact Aetna contract, county, provider network and Evidence of Coverage before joining.

HMO: Aetna is emphasizing its HMO products for 2027 because of their pricing and coordinated local provider networks. These plans often focus on contracted doctors and hospitals for routine non-emergency care. A lower premium can be valuable, but a shopper who travels regularly or wants a specialist outside the network must check the precise exceptions, referral requirements and non-emergency out-of-network policy.

HMO-POS: A point-of-service feature may permit specified out-of-network services with additional cost sharing. It is not a promise of unrestricted access to all providers. Review the plan's covered service categories, applicable deductibles, referral rules and network definitions; some HMO-POS plans use the POS feature more narrowly than readers expect.

PPO: An Aetna PPO generally offers more opportunity to use qualified out-of-network providers, but out-of-network charges and annual out-of-pocket exposure can differ from in-network costs. Check whether the provider accepts the plan's terms and what it means to receive covered care outside the contracted network. Nationwide Aetna employer PPO experience is not evidence that a Medicare PPO uses the same doctors or reimbursement arrangement.

For any Medicare Advantage plan, compare the monthly premium, maximum out-of-pocket (MOOP), inpatient and specialist copays, coverage for outpatient services, dental allowance, formulary and medical prior authorization together. A $0 monthly plan premium alone does not measure total annual cost. Read the plan-specific Evidence of Coverage and use Medicare Plan Finder for the intended ZIP and year.

2027 Medicare Advantage Benefits: What Is Actually Promised?

Aetna's national 2027 product announcement says its offered Medicare Advantage plans include dental, vision and hearing benefits and a basic SilverSneakers fitness membership, subject to the detailed plan terms. It describes a covered annual Healthy Home Visit by a licensed Signify Health clinician and certain $0 in-network preventive services. At least one plan in each participating county is expected to include an OTC allowance. The Aetna Extra Benefits Card combines qualifying allowances on selected plans, and unused funds, eligible items and merchants are governed by the particular benefit rules.

Members with eligible plans may see dental cleanings, eyewear or hearing services, a fitness program, home-assessment visits and support through Resources For Living. The amount of dental coverage, eyewear allowance, hearing aid copays, covered transportation and access to home services can still differ significantly. Advertised wellness offerings should be evaluated after confirming the core medical provider network and drug list. Do not mistake an allowance for unrestricted cash or believe that every Aetna customer receives every extra.

SilverScript Part D and 2027 Prescription Costs

Older patient discussing medication choices with a pharmacist beside an Aetna information folder
Illustrative prescription review. SilverScript and Medicare Advantage drug copays vary by formulary, pharmacy, drug tier and plan year.

Aetna continues to offer a stand-alone SilverScript Choice Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) in qualifying areas, alongside Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MAPD) coverage. A stand-alone PDP is designed for people using Original Medicare or certain compatible coverage arrangements; it should not simply be stacked on top of an MAPD contract without checking Medicare coordination rules. Aetna says its 2027 MAPD plans have $0 Tier 1 drug copays at preferred pharmacies, and SilverScript Choice offers certain $0 Tier 1 drugs. This does not mean all prescriptions are free, nor does it remove non-preferred pharmacy pricing or the need for prior authorization.

The important 2027 changes are broader federal Part D benefit parameters, not Aetna-specific prices. Medicare.gov states that the standard maximum deductible for a Part D plan is $700 in 2027, compared with $615 in 2026. The annual out-of-pocket threshold for covered Part D drugs increases from $2,100 for 2026 to $2,400 for 2027; certain payments made on a beneficiary's behalf can count under program rules. These thresholds apply to the Part D benefit structure, not an all-in medical MOOP for Medicare Advantage. Specific plans may have lower deductibles, different premiums or tier-based copays.

Build a medication list using the exact drug, dosage, quantity and preferred pharmacy. Then compare the Aetna drug formulary, utilization restrictions such as prior authorization or step therapy, deductible treatment and the full year's projected cost against other plans. The CVS corporate relationship does not mean CVS Pharmacy is always the lowest-cost pharmacy for every Aetna plan. Medicare's official Part D cost guidance explains the stages and limits; Aetna's SilverScript Choice product page has ZIP-code plan and formulary tools.

D-SNP and C-SNP: Coverage for Additional Needs

Older woman talking with family and an independent care coordinator about Aetna special-needs plan information
Illustration of family care coordination. Eligibility and supplemental benefits for Aetna D-SNP and C-SNP plans depend on specific program rules.

Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans (D-SNPs) serve people who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid. A D-SNP may coordinate medical and prescription benefits and provide case-management support, but benefit integration, Medicaid eligibility category and service-area rules vary by plan and state. Aetna announced expansion into 119 additional counties for its 2026 D-SNP products; verify 2027 locations rather than treating the older expansion figure as a current list.

Chronic Condition Special Needs Plans (C-SNPs) address qualifying long-term conditions such as diabetes, chronic heart failure or specified cardiovascular disorders. Aetna's 2027 expansion to 25 states is an overall availability announcement, not the number of eligible counties. Condition verification by an appropriate provider can be required to enroll or remain enrolled. Selected plans offer benefits tailored to relevant conditions and certain $0 visits; other medical services still follow the contract's rules.

Aetna also describes Institutional Special Needs Plan (I-SNP) options for people meeting qualifying institutional or institutional-equivalent needs. It is misleading to recommend an I-SNP or C-SNP to every Medicare beneficiary based only on age. Eligibility, facility participation, covered medication lists, care management and Medicaid coordination matter more than a generic extra-benefit headline.

Doctors, Hospitals, Referrals and Prior Authorization

Family and doctor discussing care in a clinic with Aetna informational materials on the table
Illustrative independent clinic visit; the pictured clinician is not represented as an Aetna-contracted provider.

Provider access is often the decisive difference between Medicare Advantage plans with similar premiums. Aetna's broader organization may contract with many hospitals and clinicians, but each HMO, PPO, employer or Medicaid product can have a different directory. For 2027 HMO shoppers in particular, check whether the exact preferred primary care physician, health system, specialists, imaging center and outpatient facilities are in the selected plan's network for the new year. Call the practice and confirm with the current insurer directory; each is subject to updates.

Prior authorization may apply to some specialty drugs, inpatient stays, imaging, rehabilitation or post-acute services. Medicare Advantage plans must follow applicable Medicare rules but can still require plan review before non-emergency care. Ask whether a service has a specialist referral requirement, what documentation is needed, what happens when an approval is denied and how to appeal. Retain approval references and keep copies of notices. Aetna's Medicare member materials and the Evidence of Coverage control over generalized website explanations.

CMS Medicare Star Ratings: 2027 Versus 2026

CMS Star Ratings assess specific Medicare Advantage and Part D contracts on a five-star scale. Aetna reported in October 2026 that more than 69% of its Medicare Advantage members were in 2027 plans rated 4.0 stars or above, based on the CMS October 8, 2026 release and September 2026 membership. The company's October 2025 report had said more than 81% of Medicare Advantage members were in 2026 contracts with at least four stars, using September 2025 membership. Those figures describe different plan years and enrollment snapshots; their difference is not itself the amount by which an individual's plan quality changed.

Aetna's 2026 report specifically identified contract H5521 and H5522 at 4.5 stars, H1609 at 4.5 stars, and H3959 and H2293 at four stars. These are 2026 contract ratings, not universal scores that should be assigned to 2027 policies. The appropriate comparison is the exact 2027 contract and plan shown in Medicare Plan Finder or the CMS 2027 Star Ratings dataset.

Aetna's 2027 press release also lists selected average or aggregated measure-level scores, including Plan All-Cause Readmissions at 4.77 stars, Medication Review for Older Adults at 5.00 and Complaints about the Drug Plan at 4.29. These are reported measure scores—not an overall Aetna insurer score, not a numeric Medicare complaint rate, and not proof that any given county plan earned those exact values.

Medicare Complaints, NCQA and AM Best: Three Different Signals

Complaints: A national NAIC complaint index for individual commercial medical insurance cannot be carried over to Aetna Medicare Advantage. An older Forbes Advisor analysis cited a 0.15 individual-health complaint ratio; because it is tied to the individual/commercial context and a different reporting period, we do not publish it as a current Medicare-wide number. CMS complaint-related ratings, appeals and service metrics must be interpreted for the actual Medicare contract and measurement period. You can request assistance or report issues through your plan and Medicare's complaint procedures.

NCQA: NCQA released its 2026 Health Plan Ratings in September 2026, but quality scores are associated with particular plans and lines of business. We did not infer a new national 2026 Aetna quality score by reusing an older Forbes-cited 3.4/5 average. Search NCQA's plan-specific report cards for the correct subsidiary, product, state and year.

AM Best: In June 2026, AM Best affirmed an A (Excellent) Financial Strength Rating for Aetna Life Insurance Company and the other rated members of the Aetna Health & Life Group. This reflects the rated insurers' ability to meet ongoing insurance obligations, not a medical outcomes score and not a blanket certification of all differently named Aetna-related entities. Check the issuing company on your actual policy. Source: AM Best June 2026 Aetna rating action.

How Large Is Aetna Medicare Compared With Competitors?

KFF's March 2026 CMS enrollment analysis places CVS Health Corporation at about 12% of national Medicare Advantage enrollment, behind UnitedHealth Group and Humana by parent-organization share. This is a parent-level market statistic; it is not the percentage of counties with Aetna plans, a satisfaction score, the proportion of Aetna plans rated highly or the number of people enrolled in a specific legal entity.

Aetna's late-2026 corporate materials describe approximately 37 million people served across numerous health-benefit products and related services. That broader corporate count should not be confused with Medicare Advantage enrollment. The right denominator matters: CVS/Aetna's corporate membership, CMS Medicare Advantage contract membership and Medicare beneficiaries living within a product's potential service area measure different populations.

Coverage topic

Employer-Sponsored Insurance, Medicaid and Medigap

Employer-sponsored Aetna: Group health coverage can include medical, dental, behavioral health and pharmacy benefits, often with HMO or PPO network choices decided by the employer's contract. Employer group coverage is still an active Aetna line of business even though individual ACA exchange coverage ended. Read your benefits booklet, Summary of Benefits and Coverage, employee premium contribution, out-of-network provisions and employer renewal notice; a national ACA cost benchmark cannot price the group plan.

Aetna Better Health / Medicaid: Medicaid managed care is a separate state-administered program. Eligibility, participating insurer, provider access, prescription limits and covered extras depend on the particular state contract. Some enrollees also qualify for Medicare, in which case D-SNP integration and Medicaid cost-sharing rules may affect the decision. Never assume the former 17-state ACA map represents where Medicaid managed care is offered.

Medicare Supplement / Medigap: Aetna-affiliated insurers offer standardized Medigap policies in eligible states. A Medigap policy helps pay certain out-of-pocket costs under Original Medicare but normally does not bundle Part D prescription coverage or replicate Medicare Advantage dental and fitness programs. Aetna identifies several affiliated underwriting companies, including Aetna Health and Life Insurance Company, Aetna Life Insurance Company and Continental Life-related carriers. Your eligibility, initial enrollment protections, underwriting and premium pricing depend on state law and the exact policy.

Why the Aetna ACA Map Shows Only a Former 17-State Footprint

Family reviewing historic Aetna exchange insurance information at home
Illustration of comparing previous coverage. Aetna's 17 highlighted states on this review's map are its former individual ACA exchange footprint, not active 2026 or 2027 Marketplace availability.

Aetna's December 2025 OfficeLink provider bulletin confirmed that Aetna CVS Health, Banner|Aetna and Innovation Health exited the Individual and Family Plans exchange business effective January 1, 2026. The affected historical footprint comprised Arizona, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, Utah and Virginia. Accordingly, the map on this page is deliberately marked former ACA footprint. It must not be used to identify Aetna Medicare, Medicaid or employer service areas.

Some older third-party Aetna reviews still display the former 17-state Marketplace list, ACA HMO/EPO/PPO age comparisons and an average premium of $647 per month with an average Silver deductible of $3,586. The full age, metal-tier and competitor tables retained below are explicitly historical Forbes/HealthCare.gov research benchmarks, not current Aetna 2026 or 2027 individual exchange offers. They cannot serve as an enrollment quote. For today's individual ACA coverage, go to HealthCare.gov or the applicable state exchange to see current approved issuers and subsidy eligibility.

Aetna Versus Humana, UHC, Kaiser and Local Alternatives

Against Humana: Both insurers sell Medicare-related products, but their 2027 plans, local networks, drug formularies and contract Star Ratings must be compared in the same ZIP code. Humana's aggregate enrollment share or plan-type cost studies do not predict a better fit for every Aetna shopper. If chronic-condition care coordination is important, compare the actual D-SNP or C-SNP options and eligibility rules, not just the number of states each company cites.

Against UnitedHealthcare: UHC can be a competitor in Medicare Advantage but the brand's ACA exchange footprint is an unrelated comparison. An Aetna PPO might permit some out-of-network use while a local UHC HMO has a lower MOOP—or the reverse. The only meaningful price comparison matches annual premium, specialist access, drug coverage, supplemental benefits and total out-of-pocket exposure for the same household and plan year.

Against Kaiser Permanente: Kaiser's integrated care model can be attractive where it operates and where a person wants its clinical system. Aetna's contracting/network model may offer different provider choices. Kaiser's limited geography and exact plan eligibility matter, as do Aetna's local HMO/PPO network boundaries. The better choice depends on your doctors, referrals, preferred hospitals and prescription coverage rather than brand recognition.

Against local or other national carriers: Compare licensed 2027 Medicare products in the official Medicare Plan Finder. Do not rank a carrier using legacy Aetna ACA premiums or cross-line complaint statistics. A marketplace insurer such as Ambetter or Oscar may be relevant for a person under 65 shopping for ACA coverage, but it is not necessarily a substitute for a Medicare Advantage plan.

Who Should Consider Aetna—and Who Should Compare Carefully?

  • Consider Aetna: a Medicare beneficiary whose local 2027 Aetna contract includes preferred doctors, hospitals and medications at an affordable projected annual cost, with extras that will genuinely be used.
  • Consider Aetna: an eligible person looking for coordinated D-SNP/C-SNP care, after verifying eligibility, benefits and exactly which condition or Medicaid rules apply.
  • Consider Aetna: an employee offered a competitive Aetna group plan; compare the employer contribution, network, deductible and cost sharing with other available work benefits.
  • Compare carefully: someone who needs frequent out-of-network specialists, travels across several states, uses expensive branded medications or expects complex post-acute services subject to authorization.
  • Do not shortlist Aetna for this purpose: a shopper trying to purchase an Aetna-branded individual ACA exchange plan for 2026 or 2027; the formerly available exchange business exited in January 2026.

A Practical 2027 Enrollment Checklist

  1. Determine the product: Medicare Advantage, a stand-alone Part D drug plan, Original Medicare plus Medigap, employer insurance, or Medicaid. Do not combine costs and rules across these categories.
  2. Enter your ZIP code and year in Medicare Plan Finder for 2027. Review plans only if you are eligible and they cover your county.
  3. Look up every regular doctor, specialist, clinic and hospital in the exact Aetna network and, when possible, independently confirm with the provider's office.
  4. Enter medications by drug name, dosage and quantity; check the formulary, Tier 1 restrictions, specialty drugs, preferred pharmacy and projected annual costs.
  5. Calculate the year, not just the monthly premium: Part B premium, any additional plan premium, medical and drug deductibles, copays, coinsurance and medical MOOP. The Part D covered-drug threshold is separate from the MA medical MOOP.
  6. Check the specific contract's 2027 CMS Star Rating, supplemental-benefit allowances, Evidence of Coverage, referral and prior-authorization rules.
  7. For a renewal, compare the Annual Notice of Change and any termination or network notices. Keep records of an enrollment confirmation and review the new insurance card and provider list before January 1.

Frequently Asked Questions About Aetna

Does Aetna still sell health insurance in 2027?

Yes. Aetna has announced 2027 Medicare Advantage, SilverScript Part D and other Medicare-related products and continues other business lines such as employer and Medicaid-related coverage. Its individual ACA exchange business ended in 2026. Product availability depends on the exact program, state and ZIP code.

Why is the Aetna map marked as former coverage?

The 17 states are Aetna's former individual/family ACA exchange footprint. They are not Aetna's current Medicare Advantage footprint, so the map is labeled historical to avoid suggesting 2026 or 2027 ACA exchange enrollment is available.

Is every 2027 Aetna Medicare Advantage plan rated four stars?

No. Aetna said more than 69% of its MA members were in plans rated at least four stars for the 2027 rating year. Individual contracts vary; check the exact plan's Star Rating through Medicare.gov.

Does a $0 Aetna Medicare Advantage premium mean free health care?

No. Aetna says at least one $0-additional-plan-premium option is offered in each participating county, but Medicare Part B premiums and cost sharing for covered care can still apply. Each policy has its own benefits, copays and MOOP.

How much is the Part D out-of-pocket threshold in 2027?

Medicare.gov lists $2,400 for covered Part D drugs in 2027, compared with $2,100 in 2026. These are federal drug-benefit thresholds, not a unique Aetna price or the Medicare Advantage medical out-of-pocket maximum.

Are CVS pharmacies automatically preferred for Aetna SilverScript?

No universal preference can be assumed. Use the applicable plan's pharmacy directory and pricing tools to see which CVS and other pharmacies are preferred in your area for your exact medicines.

Can I use Aetna Medicare Advantage outside the United States?

Emergency or urgently needed services may have plan-specific coverage rules, but routine international care is not universally covered by all Aetna Medicare plans. Check the Evidence of Coverage and travel limitations before leaving the country.

When can I switch to an Aetna Medicare plan for 2027?

The standard annual period to join or change most Medicare health and drug plans for January 1, 2027 runs October 15–December 7, 2026. Initial enrollment and other special periods have different eligibility rules.

How this Aetna review was built

Data checked October 23, 2026. Methodology documents scope and limitations; it is not a ranking score.

Research date and scope
October 23, 2026. This independent review addresses Aetna’s announced 2027 Medicare portfolio, 2026 Medicare comparison context, employer/Medicaid/Medigap lines and the historical individual ACA exchange exit.
Product/geography
Aetna’s 2027 41-state-plus-D.C. Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug footprint and 2026 43-state-plus-D.C. footprint are carrier statements; neither is the former 17-state ACA map. All Medicare offers require ZIP/county and plan verification.
Quality rating
The 2027 over-69% and 2026 over-81% four-star-or-higher statistics are Aetna-reported Medicare enrollment shares using CMS ratings and different Sept membership snapshots. They are not a company-wide CMS rating nor a guarantee for a local contract.
Plan-level Stars
H5521, H5522, H1609, H3959 and H2293 examples are 2026 Aetna-reported CMS contract scores. Check CMS October 8 2026 data for the actual 2027 contract. Do not transfer 2026 Stars to 2027.
Costs
2026 $615 Part D maximum deductible and $2,100 covered-drug OOP threshold; 2027 $700 and $2,400. These are Medicare.gov federal program parameters, not Aetna-specific premium quotes or the Medicare Advantage medical MOOP.
ACA historical benchmarks
Forbes/HealthCare.gov $647 average premium, $3,586 average Silver deductible, age, tier and HMO/EPO/PPO tables are attributed pre-exit reference samples. Aetna individual ACA exchange enrollment ended Jan 1 2026 per carrier OfficeLink. Never describe them as purchasable 2026/2027 Aetna plans.
Ratings separation
AM Best A (Excellent) applies to named rated Aetna Health & Life Group operating insurers. The prior Forbes 4.2/5 is third-party editorial ACA context. NCQA scores are product/plan-specific; no 2026 Aetna-wide NCQA score has been independently calculated.
Complaints
Older Forbes-cited 0.15 NAIC individual-health complaint reference has not been carried into the Medicare complaint field because product/entity/reporting-year scope differs. CMS complaint measures must be evaluated by Medicare contract, not as NAIC individual-health ratios.
Market-share methods
KFF 12% CVS Health March 2026 Medicare Advantage share is parent-level CMS enrollment analysis and cannot be equated with individual Aetna plan ratings, counties or Aetna’s broader corporate membership.
Benefit and member verification
Exact Evidence of Coverage, Annual Notice of Change, Summary of Benefits and Coverage for group products, legal issuer, network, formulary, MOOP, referrals, prior authorization and pharmacy tier pricing control over editorial descriptions.
Illustration disclosure
Six original AI-assisted carrier-identified editorial images depict fictional people and independent informational folders. They are not evidence of real Aetna customers, doctors, employees, policy forms or endorsements.

Questions & customer reviews

Frequently asked questions

Answers to common research questions about Aetna.

Can I still enroll in an Aetna ACA marketplace plan?

No. Aetna no longer sells individual or family ACA marketplace plans — see this page for when and why it exited. If you need marketplace coverage, compare active carriers in your state instead.

What plan types are usually offered?

Plan types such as HMO, EPO and PPO vary by carrier, state and service area. Use this review as a starting point, then confirm the exact network type in the current plan documents for your ZIP code.

How do I know if I qualify for a subsidy?

Premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions depend on household income, household size and other Marketplace eligibility rules. Use the official Marketplace application or estimator for household-specific results; this review does not determine eligibility.

Can I switch carriers mid-year?

Generally you can only switch during Open Enrollment, unless you have a qualifying life event (like losing other coverage, moving, marriage, or a new baby) that opens a Special Enrollment Period.

How do I check if my doctor is in-network?

Network coverage varies by specific plan, not just by carrier. Search the carrier's directory using the exact plan and ZIP code, then confirm directly with the provider or pharmacy when possible.

What's the difference between HMO and EPO plans?

An HMO typically requires a referral to see a specialist and limits care to in-network providers. An EPO also limits care to in-network providers but usually does not require a referral.

How do I file a claim or a complaint?

Claims and member complaints are handled through the carrier's plan documents, member portal and customer-service process. For unresolved insurance complaints, your state insurance department can provide the applicable consumer-assistance route.

Is this the same as Medicare or Medicaid?

Medicare and Medicaid are separate government programs with their own eligibility rules. Some carriers, including Aetna, may offer separate Medicare or Medicaid products in addition to ACA marketplace coverage; verify program eligibility and local availability through the applicable official program.

What if I already had Aetna coverage?

If your ACA marketplace plan was through Aetna, that coverage ended and you needed to select an active carrier for the next plan year. Use the official Marketplace for your ZIP code to verify current replacement options and any household-specific financial assistance.
