Use the existing profile’s access flow
  • Find the exact listing and select Request Access when Google offers it. Avoid creating a duplicate.
  • Start with the correct existing listing; Google’s screens depend on whether someone already manages it.
  • Keep the original request or decision email so you can use any next step Google offers there.

Before you start

Is this the right guide for you?

Use this guide if

  • You own the business, and a verified profile for it is managed by someone else.
  • You see “Someone else may manage this Business Profile” when adding the business.

Check another path if

  • The listing exists but nobody manages it: claim it through the setup guide instead.
  • You are not authorized to represent the business.
The short version

How the request works

A storefront or hybrid business requests access through Google’s add-business page; a service-area business without a shop or office contacts Business Profile support instead. Either way, Google emails you a confirmation.

The current owner is notified and has 3 days to respond. You then get an approval or a rejection, and a rejected request can be appealed. If there is no response, you may be able to claim the profile.

  • The confirmation email to track your request
Ownership routes

Which ownership route applies to your business?

The practical walkthrough

4 practical steps. One clear next action.

Read the key points here. Open the extra detail only when you need it.

  1. Step 01

Storefront or hybrid business: request access

    • Go to business.google.com/add, enter the business name and address, and choose your business.
    • When you see “Someone else may manage this Business Profile”, select Request Access, complete the form and submit it.
    Details & things to check

You receive a confirmation email after you submit. Make sure you selected the right business and address before you send the request, especially if similar businesses are nearby.

  2. Step 02

    Service-area business: contact support

    • If the business has no physical shop or office, Google directs ownership transfers to Business Profile support.
    • In the support form, enter “Transfer ownership of listing” in the field for what you need help with, then select that same option as the issue description.
    Details & things to check

Accounts that use bulk verification can use the bulk upload spreadsheet method instead, according to Google.

  3. Step 03

    Track the three-day response window

    • The current owner is notified by email and has 3 days to respond.
    • Check the status by signing in to your Business Profile or through the link in your confirmation email.
    Details & things to check

If the request is approved, you receive an approval email and can manage the profile. If it is denied, you receive a rejection email.

  4. Step 04

If there’s no answer or a denial

    • After 3 days without a response, you may be able to claim the profile: open the confirmation email, select View request, then Verify, and follow the steps.
    • If the request is denied, you can appeal the decision or suggest an edit to the profile.
    Details & things to check

You can also look for a Claim or Verify button after signing in to the profile. Google notes that the option to claim a profile isn’t always available; other routes include reporting a policy violation, resolving duplicate profiles or contacting support. Claiming leads into verification, so prepare for the methods Google offers.

What to avoid

Common mistakes

  • Creating a second profile for the same location to get around an ownership problem.
  • Requesting access to a business you are not authorized to represent.
  • Ignoring the confirmation email, which is the route to claiming after the 3-day window.
A few useful answers

Before you continue

How long does the current owner have to respond?

Google says the current owner has 3 days to respond to an ownership request.

What if my request is denied?

You receive a rejection email. You can still suggest an edit to the profile or appeal the decision.

Can I always claim the profile if the owner doesn’t respond?

Not always. Google says you may be able to claim it after 3 days, but the option to claim a profile isn’t always available.

How can I tell whether I already own the listing?

If Google does not show Claim this business or Own this business, you may already be an owner. Check the Google account and profile before opening another request.

Where can I check the status after submitting?

Google says you can sign in to your Business Profile or use the link in the confirmation email. Keep that email because it may also show your next steps after the response window.

Does a service-area business use the same Request Access screen?

For a service-area business without a physical shop or office, Google points to Business Profile support. In the form, request Transfer ownership of listing; signing in is required.

Research & accountability

Go straight to the source.

We reviewed Google’s Business Profile ownership instructions and its guidance on suggesting edits on October 29, 2026. The branches are based on published storefront, service-area and response rules; we did not submit a live ownership request or verify any account. The 3-day response window does not guarantee that a claim option will appear.
